Interdisciplinary Studies (IDSC)

The IDSC program allows individual students to plan a focused course of study that (1) best meets individual career interests and (2) is not currently available at Auburn University. The Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary University Studies, offered through the University College, allows students to attain a broad education and acquire diverse skill sets unique to a profession they desire.  Students seeking an Interdisciplinary University Studies Degree have the opportunity to create a personalized academic program.  Students are allowed to customize a curriculum that demonstrates proficiency in broad skills as well as discipline-specific knowledge.

Program Mission

The mission of the Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary University Studies is to offer students an opportunity to create a unique program of study to meet their personal, academic and professional goals. The degree enables students to seek professional careers in diverse occupational fields and prepares them for the challenges of today’s global economy.

Through combining different disciplines in an individually designed major, students are able to integrate their undergraduate education, disciplinary coursework and real world experiences. Opportunities to demonstrate these competencies are carried out through capstone experiences such as internships, service-learning projects and thesis completion.

Program Goals

The IDSC major allows the students to create new interdisciplinary curricula leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. Students draw from different areas of study at Auburn University to create an academic emphasis not otherwise available (a minimum of two different colleges or schools is required). Students identified as best served through an Interdisciplinary Degree format include those with a desired career that requires a unique combination of academic disciplines and students unable to locate an academic major of interest to them. The IDSC tasks students with creating a degree that is employable and targeted towards a specific career.
